About Joan Brander
Joan “Ivanka” Brander, Canadian artist, author, lecturer and instructor, carries forward the pysanky tradition she learned from her grandmother (Baba). Based in Vancouver, Joan has over 60 years of experience teaching and sharing this cultural artform worldwide.
Her published works include children’s activity books, instructional guides, and teacher resources—some featured in the Library of Congress. She is also a 2014 finalist for the Richmond Arts Education Award.
What Are Pysanky?
Pysanky are Ukrainian Easter eggs decorated using a wax-resist (batik) technique with beeswax and dyes. The name comes from “pysaty,” meaning “to write” — because designs are written with wax. This centuries-old tradition symbolizes life, hope, and cultural resilience.
Stand with Ukraine
Since the Russian invasion in February 2022, Baba’s Beeswax has stood with Ukraine, embracing the legend that “as long as pysanky are being made, evil shall not prevail over good in the world.” A portion of proceeds from supporting kits is donated to humanitarian aid for Ukraine.
