The essentials: Beeswax, Kistka and Dyes

Why and How to Clean Your Traditional, Candle-Heated Kistka
Dirt and debris could block the funnel preventing the melted beeswax from writing on your egg smoothly. Melt the beeswax like you normally would using a candle. Turn the kistka upside down and give it a sharp strike (whack) on the side of your hand. All of the melted beeswax will come out, bringing with it the dirt and debris. Use a paper towel to protect your working surface. To clean the handle, wipe off melted beeswax with a tissue. Alternatively, use a cleaning wire to clean the funnel. See more in this short video in our YouTube iluvpysanky Channel in the How To’s and DIY playlist.
Tip
Do not touch the funnel of your kistka to the candle wick, as soot could get inside and cause a blockage. Instead, place it in the centre of the flame. Do not practice on paper, as small particles could get inside and cause a blockage. Instead, practice on an unused egg.

What Are Pysanky?
Pysanky are the colourful decorated eggs made with beeswax and dyes in a technique akin to batik. The tradition started in Ukraine in ancient pagan times. The name pysanky (singular pysanka) is derived from the Ukrainian verb pysaty —to write. It is prounced PIH-sahn-kih (with the emphasis on the first syllable “PIH”). Similarly, the singular decorated egg is the word “pysanka” and is pronounced PIH-sahn-kah.
Stand with Ukraine
Since the Russian invasion in February 2022, Baba’s Beeswax has stood with Ukraine, embracing the legend that “as long as pysanky are being made, evil shall not prevail over good in the world.” A portion of proceeds from supporting kits is donated to humanitarian aid for Ukraine.
